Artist of the Day: Julia Margaret Cameron

A few years ago I saw an awesome exhibit at the Met on photography pioneers and I was particularly struck by the photos of Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1849). At the age of 48 Cameron received a camera as a gift and soon began taking photos of her friends, family, and acquaintances, many of whom were prominent in Victoria society. Makes me want to get out my real camera (with film!!)

From the MetCameron's technique was unorthodox. She purposely avoided the perfect resolution and minute detail that glass negatives permitted, opting instead for carefully directed light, soft focus, and long exposures (counted in minutes, when others did all they could to reduce exposure times to a matter of seconds). No commercial portrait photographer of the 1860s, for instance, would have portrayed Sir John Herschel (1792–1871)—the nation's preeminent scientist and mathematician, considered the equal of Sir Isaac Newton—as Cameron did in 1867 (below).

Girl and Badger, Finally Purchased!

Photo & Poster by Jenny Brandt

I'm pretty much obsessed with the blog Dos Family. I've been reading it for a couple of years and its one of the few blogs I still get excited about when I see a new post in my Google Reader. It's run by Jenny and Isabelle and it generally makes me feel like things are a lot cooler over in Sweden. Jenny also runs a online print shop where she sells posters of the awesome photograph Girl and Badger. Today I read there were only a few posters left so I simply had to snap one up. Can't wait to frame it and get it up on the wall.  I also really wish I understood Swedish so I could watch Isabelle's show Fix Rummet where she works with kids to make their rooms awesome or to build playhouses. So fun!

Different Types of ...

Just a few comparisons of various things to get Monday morning started. Last night was a late evening of enjoying the Super Bowl and eating (okay, mostly eating). For the record I am partial to the coffee cup lids in the upper lefthand corner and the third one in the second row - Dunkin' Donuts!

On Safari

Seeing Nick Brandt's photos on HonestlyWTF earlier this week absolutely took my breath away. It feels like forever ago that I was in Uganda seeing some of these very animals! Though my point-and-shoot photos are garbage in comparison, it's fun to take a trip down memory lane. Also, if you're in the market, all of Mr. Brandt's big game photos are for sale and will benefit the Big Life Foundation. Check them all out (and maybe invest in some wall art). Aren't his zebras totally awesome!?! Also, I would not want to get that close to lionesses who are about to hunt!
